Hip Bursitis Treatment
Bursitis is an inflammation of the bursae which are fluid filled sacs that function as friction-reducing, lubricating cushions between moving tissues of the body. The hip has two major bursae, the trochanteric bursa and the ischial bursa, which can cause hip pain and stiffness when inflamed. Although the pain can be a nuisance, hip bursitis is different from arthritis and responds well to conservative treatments.
What causes hip bursitis?
Typically, hip bursitis is a result of a soft-tissue trauma or strain injury. Very occasionally, hip bursitis can be the result of an infection of the bursa. Activities that can increase your risk of hip bursitis include going up and down stairs, excessive exercise, and other repetitive activities that put strain on the hip area. If you have a history of hip injury, you’re also at a higher risk for hip bursitis. Symptoms may include pain and tenderness of the outer hip and thigh, tightness, or dull, burning pain in the hip or upper buttock area. Pain symptoms of hip bursitis may cause difficulty sleeping, walking, or climbing stairs, and frequently occur after sitting idly for long periods of time.
